It was a very barbarous time full of corruption and immorality, which I thought was tastefully portrayed. The gore is not gratuitous, but rather tells the story.

It roots for its favorite just as they do. The historical atmosphere is very accurate, giving a good feel for the world of the Roman soldier and gladiator.

Russell Crowe gave the best performance of his career. So no originality in story, then. The previous chanting and music is minimized to keenly focus attention in on the main characters, who each become the principle image in every second shot. The films draws attention into this key scene by alleviating the burden of the numerous cuts between crowds and faces and setting this dialogue to a rhythm.

This is the first shot of Maximus in the scene, and the first he has been shown since being captured during an escape attempt. Myth can teach us a great deal about the divine nature of prowess and honour in battle; the Norse Valhalla and the Elysian Fields of the Greeks are only two examples which bear testimony to the afterlife rewards which lie in store for those who live and die honourably by the sword.

Films such as What Dreams May Come might seem far more suitable viewing. Where, one may well ask, is the spirituality, let alone ordinary human compassion, in a Roman commanding officer whose objective is the utter destruction of a recalcitrant tribe?

Although the film does not purport to be either deeply philosophical or deeply insightful into human character - it is, after all, a Hollywood spectacular - it can, nevertheless, make us think philosophically about the nature of evil, the roots of violence, and the undeniable magic and mystery of a clean and shining Mars reflecting the divinity of the archetypal warrior.

Maximus provides a great example of leadership and self-sacrifice throughout the film. We seek it through money, through education, through politics, and through our social ties. Their eyes follow Commodus as he walks by them.
